At Snowfall (2021)
An accidental two day project.
Stuck indoors on a particularly cold, snowy day in Helsinki, I found myself looking over interviews I’d conducted last year, in which I asked friends from the UK to describe their first memory of snow. Inspired by these sights, sounds, descriptions, and their sudden emotional hold on me, I took my favourite handheld recorder and spent the day walking around Helsinki.
I reviewed these fragments the next day, and felt the need to stitch the scraps of voice and sound together. Not overthinking, I treated it as a reactive and instinctual work.
Perhaps this is more of a personal piece. It’s nice though, for a change, to let it exist for what it is: an expression of the moment and an attempt to capture the snow.
Many thanks to everyone who told me their snow stories!
