ABOUT

Delilah Sykes is an artist working in London and Leeds, UK.

Rooted in tenderness, my sound-based practice examines the metaphysical by grounding it in the mundane. My work expands into performance, writing, installation and film. Facilitation is also a key part of my practice, working with young people and community groups in a way that centres alternative creative practices and co-creation.

Delilah is a warm, considered, and friendly artist. Whilst working on Speak Up, a co-creation project with young people , Delilah showed a genuine interest in the young people ideas and was generous in sharing her skills and creativity with them. Her audio work helped tell the story, shaped the imaginary world and brought a range of art forms together create a brilliant short film.

Sound as a phenomena is fascinating to me. I work closely with this subject, often looking to cultural or academic tradition, then re-contextualising it within the day-to-day. It’s important that the scholarly and banal are given equal weight. Though my projects are personal, they evoke wider human experiences. The work has a quiet urgency. Gathering these experiences, phenomena, situations, is an act that saves such fragments from a world of functionality in which they may be trampled on.
